Yarmouth's own water district

Unlike Portland and South Portland, Yarmouth has its own utility. The Yarmouth Water District, chartered by the State of Maine in 1923, serves more than 3,000 homes and businesses through about 79 miles of mains, and its water comes from four wells. Well water can differ from Portland's very soft Sebago Lake water, so if you're replacing a water heater or fixtures, ask the plumber whether anything about your water changes the recommendation.

Historic homes

Yarmouth's long history left it with many older homes, and plumbing in a house built in the 1700s or 1800s has been added and updated over many decades. Pipes can end up in exterior walls, old ells and additions over crawl spaces, the places most likely to freeze. Before winter, find out where your pipes run, insulate the exposed ones and shut off and drain outdoor faucets. For more, read plumbing in older homes.
