About Saco
Saco sits on Saco Bay across the Saco River from its twin city, Biddeford, and borders Scarborough, Buxton, Dayton and Old Orchard Beach. Its population grew from 18,482 in 2010 to 20,381 at the 2020 Census, with about 9,500 housing units. Settled in 1631, it was renamed from Pepperellborough to Saco in 1805 and became a city in 1867. Its textile mills on Factory Island declined in the 20th century, and the York Manufacturing Company closed in 1958. Today it's known for Thornton Academy, Funtown Splashtown USA, Ferry Beach State Park and Camp Ellis on the shore.

Newer homes and older ones
Saco has both older in-town houses and newer homes, and each has weak spots. Newer homes have the same failure points to watch as any other: water heater relief valves, washing machine hoses, toilet supply lines and sump pumps. Older homes add aging drain lines and pipes in cold exterior walls. Either way, know where your main shut-off is. Read how to find your main shut-off valve.
Saco's water
Saco is served by Maine Water, which also serves Biddeford, Old Orchard Beach and Pine Point, about 40,000 people in all, from the Saco River Drinking Water Resource Center that opened in June 2022. If you notice a sudden change in water pressure or color across the whole house, check with Maine Water before calling a plumber, since the cause may be in the street rather than your pipes.
