Plumbers in Deering Center: the short answer

Deering Center is a residential neighborhood of established single-family homes, so the plumbing calls here are about boilers and water heaters, older drain lines, basement sump pumps and frozen pipes. Shut off the water for any active leak and call. Call (207) 555-0163 to speak with a local plumber who serves Deering Center, Deering Highlands and nearby corners, ZIP 04103.

About Deering Center

Deering was its own town, split off from Westbrook in 1871, until it was incorporated into Portland on March 9, 1899. It's named for Captain James Deering, a horse farmer and early resident. Deering Center runs roughly from Brighton Avenue to Forest Avenue and Walton Street, past Evergreen Cemetery, and includes Deering High School, Lincoln Middle School and Longfellow Elementary. Nearby, Deering Highlands is an almost entirely residential hillside with late-1800s homes by architects John Calvin Stevens and Frederick A. Tompson, and Woodfords Corner and Morrill's Corner are the nearby crossroads.

Heat and hot water

Just over half of Maine homes heated with oil in 2023, and in many of them the boiler makes the hot water too, through a coil or an indirect tank. When that boiler fails in January, the house loses heat and hot water at the same time, and pipes in cold corners can start to freeze. If your heat goes out, keep cabinet doors on outside walls open and let faucets drip while you wait for help. Read the boiler no-heat checklist.

Deering Highlands' older homes

Homes from the late 1800s have had their plumbing modernized in stages, which can leave a mix of copper, galvanized and older drain materials. Portland Water District notes lead was used in household plumbing into the 1980s, even though its service lines are lead-free, so a repair is a good time to ask the plumber what your house's pipes are made of.

Frequently asked questions

What ZIP code is Deering Center?

Deering Center, Deering Highlands and the Woodfords and Morrill's Corner areas are in ZIP 04103.

When did Deering become part of Portland?

Deering was incorporated into Portland on March 9, 1899, after separating from Westbrook as its own town in 1871.

Why did I lose hot water when my heat went out?

In many Maine homes the boiler also heats the water through a coil or indirect tank, so a boiler failure stops both.
