About Libbytown and Rosemont
Libbytown lies between Stroudwater, Rosemont, Oakdale and Parkside, with the Fore River separating it from South Portland. It's named for tavern keeper George Libby and his descendants, and Irish Catholic immigrants settled it. The neighborhood declined after Union Station on St. John Street was demolished in 1961 and I-295 split it, and today it's home to the Portland Transportation Center, Maine's busiest public transit hub. MaineDOT plans a roundabout to reconnect it, backed by a $22.4 million federal grant. Neighboring Rosemont, near Deering Center, includes Burbank Library and Capisic Pond, and nearby Nasons Corner still has bungalows dating to around 1898.

Older homes and early bungalows
A house from the late 1800s or early 1900s may still have original cast iron or clay drain lines, and decades of tree growth can push roots into the joints of the line running to the street. If drains gurgle or back up more than once, a camera inspection is the quickest way to see what's going on before deciding on cleaning, a spot repair or a new line.
Basements in spring
Portland's snowmelt and spring rain raise groundwater, and basements that stay dry most of the year can take on water in March and April. If yours has a sump pump, test it with a bucket of water before the thaw and make sure the discharge line outside isn't frozen or buried. If it doesn't, and water shows up every spring, ask a plumber whether one makes sense.
