About Biddeford

Biddeford, a York County city of 22,552 people at the 2020 Census, borders Saco and the Atlantic and has almost 15 miles of Saco River frontage. Textile mills grew up along the river, including the Pepperell Company in 1850, and at their peak they employed as many as 12,000 people. The last textile company, WestPoint Home, closed in 2009, and the mills are being redeveloped into housing and businesses, such as the North Dam Mill. The coast includes Hills Beach, Biddeford Pool, Fortunes Rocks and Granite Point, and the University of New England is home to Maine's only medical school.

Water from the Saco River

Biddeford's water comes from Maine Water, which serves Biddeford, Saco, Old Orchard Beach and Pine Point, about 40,000 people. In June 2022 it opened the $60 million Saco River Drinking Water Resource Center, which can produce up to 12 million gallons a day and replaced the original Biddeford treatment plant built in 1884. If you have questions about your water quality or a service line, Maine Water is the place to ask.

Mill apartments and beach houses

In a converted mill building, plumbing is shared across many units, so leaks and drain problems go to building management first. Near the beaches, a home left empty for part of the winter needs its heat kept at 55°F or higher, or its water shut off and lines drained, before the cold sets in.
